5 Easy to use FTP Clients

5 Easy to use FTP Clients-1245

An FTP (File Transfer Protocol) Client is an application, or web tool, that allows you to send and receive files between your computer and a web server.

One of the most common uses for these types of tools is to upload (send) files to a web server. For instance, if you are going to install WordPress or another type of content management system to your web server, you can use an FTP client.

These web tools have evolved a bit further over the years as the web has matured. This allows users to not only send and receive files to and from web servers, but also to and from web services in some instances and securely.

All of the tools here provide the most basic level of file transfer capabilities as well as a secure method for transferring files. These FTP clients are also very easy to use and simple to install.

Here is a list of the top 5 FTP clients that are both powerful and easy to use:
1. FileZilla
This FTP client is a fast and secure application or transferring files and works on a variety of computer platforms including Windows, Mac and Linux. It is available as an Open Source application which means it is available for download free of charge. FileZilla also offer additional tools such as an FTP Server which can be installed on your computer.

2. WS_FTP Home
This is another fast but simple to use FTP client. The down side to this client is that it isn’t available on all computing platforms and is not completely free. For those of you that desire support in addition to an FTP client, this may be a good option.

3. WinSCP
This tool is also available under an Open Source arrangement, making it free to use. The WinSCP developers have always been security and privacy conscious. So for those with a little more experience and a lot more concern for secure file transfers, this is probably your best option. While it is not available as a cross-platform product, it is available in a variety of languages.

4. FlashFXP
This client is another web tool that offers a free trial but is not free to use on an ongoing basis. However, it is extremely powerful and fast and has grown significantly in popularity over the past year. Again, this client lacks cross-platform support but is available in multiple languages.

5. Cyberduck
This is one of the most powerful FTP clients we have come across yet. It has been available as a MAC application for some time now, but has recently been carrying out a private beta for the most popular Windows platforms. This client handles most common FTP tasks very easily, but also allows interaction with other platforms on the web such as Google Docs, Amazon S3 services and Content Distribution Networks (CDN). This web tool is rapidly setting the stage for what to expect with FTP clients in the future.

In my experience CyberDuck is the slowest when it comes to transferring files up to and down from your ftp server.
